Paraklis “St. St. Konstantine and Elena”

Clock tower

If you’re in the town of Elena, you can’t miss the Clock Tower in the centre. It is the emblem of the town and a symbol of the hard-working and fighting spirit of the Balkan people. With its imposing appearance and clear bell ringing, it creates the Balkan atmosphere so beloved by every tourist and local.

The Daskalolivnitsa

The temple “Assumption of the Theotokos” and “St. Nikola” are located on the territory of the tova significantly from the 19th century. St. Nikola Church

Right next to the Daskalolivnitsa is the oldest church in the town – “St. Nikola”. It held many valuable books on parchment, which were burnt when it was burnt down in 1800. The church was rebuilt in 1804 with the help of wealthier citizens.

Popnikolov House and the Museum of Paleontology

The Popnikolov House impresses with its unique architecture for its time. It contributes to the general Renaissance charm of the town of Elena and attracts tourists all year round. After its renovation, it houses the Museum of Paleontology, which presents an exhibition of fossils rare for our territory.

House Museum of Hilarion Makariopolski

One more thing that you should not miss is the house museum of Hilarion Makariopolski, carrying the Bulgarianship in it. Get in touch with the life, culture and environment of the Renaissance worker. Travel back in time to the years of the Renaissance and get acquainted with the lifestyle of the Bulgarians of that period.

“Valchan Voyvoda” Memorial Complex

In the immediate vicinity of the town is the village of Rayuvtsi, where you can visit the only monument to Valchan Voyvoda. He is depicted full-length, with a rifle, standing proudly and gazing into infinity. The monument was erected in 2015 in the lovely area of Valchova Meadow.

Yovkovtsi Dam

The Elena Balkan is full of beauty and everyone finds their haven there. Only 10 km from the town of Elena is located the Yovkovtsi dam, built on the former village of the same name. It is one of the largest in Bulgaria and is wonderful for recreation, fishing or boating.

Palitsi Dam

The Palitsi Dam is also close by and again offers breathtaking views and endless opportunities for outdoor relaxation. For fishing enthusiasts, this is the perfect place to spend time practicing their favourite pastime.

Maryan Monastery

Travelling through the surroundings of the Balkan town, if you head towards Sliven, you will find yourself in the village of Maryan, where the impressive Maryan Monastery “St. God`s Transfiguration”. It is said that before she married Sultan Murad, Princess Mara stayed there and the village was named after her.

Merdan Monastery

In case you go from Elena in the direction of Veliko Tarnovo, we advise you to stop by the village of Merdanya. It is located 16 km from our town and is home to Merdanski Monastery “St. Forty Martyrs”. Light a candle for health and take a look at its interesting architecture.

Kapinovski waterfall

Only about 15 kilometers from Elena, nature lovers will discover the Kapinovsky Waterfall. With its height of about 8 meters, it is not among the highest in the country, but it is undoubtedly among the most picturesque. The water falls into a small and picturesque lake with crystal clear waters, ideal for a picnic.

Christovski Waterfall

If you love being in nature and taking a walk contemplating its fabulous views, head to Hristovski Waterfall, which is about 5 km from the town. It is also accessible by car, but we recommend you enjoy the hike and the fresh air.

Rayuv and Markov Stone and Eco Trail

Prepare your sports clothes in your suitcase and indulge in sweet tales and natural views on the Markov – Rayuv Kamok Eco Trail. The trail head is located 3 km from the town of Elena, and the road continues in the direction of the Elena-Tvarditsa Pass. Along the way there are colourful and remarkable places for recreation.

Kilifarevski Monastery

Kilifarevo Monastery “Nativity of the Virgin Mary” is located 16 km south of Veliko Tarnovo and about 5 km from the town of Kilifarevo. The monastery, together with the frescoes and the iconostasis of the church, has been declared an artistic monument of culture. The monastery was founded around 1350 by St. Theodosius of Tarnovo. Before being destroyed by the Ottoman invaders in 1393, the monastery developed literary activity.
The holy monastery was rebuilt in its present location in 1718, but was destroyed again in (1793-1798). Its reconstruction began in 1842, when master Kolyu Ficheto began to build the church “St. Dimitar” and the residential buildings at the same time.
The Kilifarevo Monastery is an active nunnery.
